Autumn is a wonderful time for a fresh start in many aspects of work, life and boosting morale, therefore creating new team activities is the perfect place to start.
At GIY we are challenging businesses to get involved in our brand-new employee wellness and sustainability challenge launching this week: Sow, Grow & Show.
One of the most effective ways of embedding sustainability in your business is to involve employees in the co-creation of hands-on sustainable practices. Our 6-week “Sow, Grow & Show” employee engagement challenge focuses on step-by-step food growing and sustainability practices, designed to make food growing easy and accessible for the whole team. By engaging your business, it connects the personal values of employees to your sustainability strategy.
how does the challenge work?
The 6-week “Sow, Grow & Show” challenge is the perfect team activity and is suitable for all employees, whether they work from the office, remotely, or on a hybrid basis.
When you sign up, your team will receive:
- A GROWBox food growing starter kit, packed with everything you need to grow your own food. Choose to grow at home or in the office;
- An interactive weekly guide on sowing seeds and caring for your new plants;
- Tips on how to shop locally and more sustainably, and buying in-season produce;
- Step-by-step DIY projects for your garden, no matter what its size is;
- Zero-waste recipes for sustainable cooking.
Each week the challenge will ask your team to take pictures of their progress and share internally or on social media by either tagging our social account (@giyireland) or using the hashtag #SowGrowShow.
We ask you to set up a GIY channel on your internal communications platform, so that your team can engage with each other and share their progress. We will provide you with a guide on how to optimise team engagement with the programme – for example, growing reminders, social media prompts, and a list of suggested conversation starters.
a team that grows together…
At the end of the 6-week challenge, we encourage your team to come together in person (where possible) and bring along the fruits of their labour – that may be pots with thriving seedlings, a homemade salad with homegrown lettuce leaves, or photos of a garden plot.
We suggest having a cuppa together to chat about the whole growing experience and to ask the questions:
- What did you enjoy about the challenge?
- What did you learn from it?
- What can you do as a team to be more sustainable together?
This is a fantastic opportunity to get your team personally engaged with company sustainability goals, by co-creating sustainable practices that are visible inside and outside the company.
This is where the magic happens, especially when employees begin to see the positive impact of the strategies that they helped to create. As a result, they understand that they are each a critical component of transitioning to a sustainable business.
